Righteousness & The Pledge of Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Pledge. A pledge is a solemn promise or undertaking. To pledge allegiance to something is to make a commitment to it, to be loyal to it.

Allegiance. Allegiance is loyalty or commitment to a country, cause, or group. When you pledge allegiance to something, you are promising to be loyal to it.

I pledge allegiance to the flag. This is a way of saying that you are loyal to the United States of America. The flag is a symbol of our country, and pledging allegiance to it is a way of showing your patriotism.

and to the republic for which it stands. The United States of America is a republic, which means that it is governed by elected officials who represent the people. The phrase “for which it stands” affirms that the Pledge is made to the country itself, not just to the government or any one person.

one nation under God. This phrase affirms that the United States is one nation, united under God. It is a way of acknowledging that our country is founded on religious principles and that we rely on God’s guidance. The phrase “under God” was added to the Pledge in 1954, during the Cold War, as a way to distinguish the United States from atheistic communist countries.

Indivisible. The word indivisible means unable to be divided. This phrase affirms that the United States is one nation, not to be divided against itself.

liberty and justice for all. The words “liberty and justice for all” reaffirm our country’s commitment to equality (not equity) and fairness. These are principles that the United States was founded on, and they continue to be important values that we uphold.

To me, The Pledge of Allegiance is similar to Righteousness.

Righteousness. The quality of being morally right or just. It can also refer to actions that are proper or good.

Righteousness Not Peace. Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909. He was a leader of the Republican Party and a prominent figure in American politics.

In a speech given in 1918, Roosevelt said,

“Righteousness, not peace, is to be our goal.”

He was speaking about the need for the United States to fight for justice, even if it meant going to war. Roosevelt believed that America had a duty to stand up for what was right, even if it meant making sacrifices. This quote is still relevant today, as we continue to strive for righteousness in our nation.

The Pledge of Allegiance is our pledge for righteousness, not peace. Righteousness is about doing the right thing. We do the right thing because it is the right thing. We don’t negotiate with Satan for peace, and we don’t do the wrong thing right.
